Affiliation
Along with physical and
character development, the heart of the Greystone program is our unique
relationship with Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. Schreiner’s
high intensity “Greystone Curriculum” is specifically designed to be far
more challenging than regular freshman year studies, and parallels the
first year coursework at the Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force
Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy.
The affiliation between a preparatory program and a 4-year fully
accredited university has been a success for our students from the very
beginning because of the “team” attitude shared between Greystone and
Schreiner University. At Greystone, we work together with the Schreiner
faculty and staff to ensure our students receive a customized
college-level academic experience. Our intent is to elevate the level of
scholastic performance so that as a Greystone graduate, you can make a
lateral and seamless transition from the university level to the academy
level.
At Schreiner, students are not numbers, they are unique individuals who
receive the attention from the faculty and staff necessary to excel.
Because of your status as academy-bound candidate, more is expected from
Greystone students by faculty. This motivates our students to a higher
level of academic performance which is at the heart of preparation for
academy-level challenges. Whether you come from a big city or a small
town high school, everyone benefits from the individualized attention,
university-level academics and elevated performance expectations. If
your objective is true academy preparation, it only makes sense to
pursue a program that will challenge and expand your scholastic
capabilities so that this year is truly meaningful and directly
applicable to your academy experience.
Greystone students live in our own residence hall on the Schreiner
University campus in Kerrville, Texas. By living in the same dorm, our
students develop a strong bond as a team. The team concept is utilized
to maintain focus on goals and objectives while the strength of the team
is used to overcome weaknesses from individual team members. The
Greystone team shares something special - they are all striving to earn
their appointments. They work to help each other academically,
athletically and emotionally because as Greystone classmates, they will
become academy classmates which is a forever bond. As a member of the
team, you are never alone in your fight to earn your appointment.
They attend classes with other Schreiner students - no uniforms, no
close-order drilling, no military trappings. The objective is to
eliminate all distractions that do not directly improve your credentials
as a candidate and prepare you for the rigors of academy life. As an
academy Commandant remarked while the Greystone program was being
developed, “allow your candidates to focus and apply themselves on what
they need to be doing as academy candidates and leave the other things
to us so we can train them the right way when they get here”. It makes
little sense to devote hours upon hours to distractions that in the end
will not help you improve your competitive edge as a candidate. On the
other hand, it does make sense to establish a substantial fall back plan
in the event that you are unsuccessful in your bid for an appointment.
There is much to be said for an academy prep program that is
specifically designed to maximize your year of “preparation” while it
also empowers you to earn 36 transferable college credits!
Greystone students are full-time Schreiner students and therefore they
receive every opportunity to get involved in extracurricular activities
as members of the campus community. Schreiner maintains a 15 to 1
student to faculty ratio, providing high quality university education
through personalized instruction. Unlike most major colleges or
universities, a Schreiner professor - not a teaching assistant or
graduate student - provides your classroom instruction, even as a
freshman. Most of the Schreiner professors have earned their PhD and
have on average, 17 years of university teaching experience.
Aside from intensive classroom instruction, Schreiner also provides
individual tutoring beyond the classroom through the Teaching and
Learning Center. Upper class students with demonstrated expertise in the
particular field of study provide one-to-one tutoring assistance at no
additional charge. Greystone students in need of additional academic
help can always find it from multiple sources at Schreiner.
Courses are reviewed to ensure what is taught at Schreiner is in-sync
with what is being taught at the academies. As changes are made to US
service academy courses, Schreiner University is informed and changes
are implemented. By working closely with the academies, Greystone
ensures that the courses presented by Schreiner are totally relevant to
what’s being taught at the academies. When you get there - and over 90%
of our students do - you’ll be fully prepared to engage every course in
order to maximize the academic opportunity.
